Friday's headline was "Outpouring of Emotion: Memorial exposes anger over treatment of Paterno." If you read the headline and the article without having watched the memorial, you would think the content of the memorial reflected the attendees’ anger about the handling of Joe Paterno’s involvement in the Sandusky scandal. That is not the case. In fact, the only direct outpouring of anger was a comment made by Phil Knight, CEO of Nike, that it was the investigation that was at fault, not Joe’s handling of it. I fully agreed with his impression; however, that was not what the memorial was about. The service I saw was speakers praising Paterno and how he affected their lives and the lasting impact he had on them, the community, and the university. There were standing ovations to the positive comments by each speaker. The headline was correct about an outpouring of emotion, but it was an outpouring of love and respect for a great man who was an inspiration to so many people. This is just one more example of the media misrepresenting what actually went on.
